A geographic departure from the rest of the collection, this work was inspired by a podcast about Mexico City. I was fascinated to hear how the gradual creep of urbanisation has effectively capped the aquifer lying below the city, preventing it’s replenishment. What was once an abundant source of life for the area is now parched. Dry strata no longer supported by the life-flow of water, falling in on themselves. Subsidence is a consequence that, paired with water shortages, the current generation of Mexico City must face.
If you are interested in hearing the podcast that captured my imagination with it’s descriptions of the unique geology of Mexico City with it’s lava fields and ancient lakes, you can find it at 99% Invisible
Description: Felted New Zealand Merino Wool and silk fibres, treated with UV protection
Artwork: 65 x 40 cm
Mounted in white tray frame with split baton for hanging.
